The Spirit of the Scene: Sketching Subjects on Site, with Martin Burns

    By ICAA ÎçÒ¹¸£Àû°¡°¡°¡°¡°¡

    November 2, 2021

This course seeks to combine studio-based graphics coursework, such as perspective drawing and shade and shadow rendering, with field-based methods such as analytical drawing to create a resource for those seeking to hone their observational sketching skills in the field. The instructor will break down, step-by-step, how a relatively quick and compelling sketch of any architectural element can be accomplished by those of all experience levels. Illustrations will supplement a presentation on historic examples of drawing types. The ultimate aim of the course is to provide participants with simple tools to better chase the complex spirit that gives a particular piece of architecture its indefinable beauty.

    Learning Objectives

    • Be able to produce a three-dimensional drawing that indicates light and form
    • Have a deeper appreciation for how architects throughout history studied buildings in a variety of media
    • Learn how to graphically suggest elements such as landscaping and sky
    • Have a deeper sense of how perspectival sketches can supplement other types of architectural field studies
